Under ett antal år i sitt tidiga vuxenliv bodde författaren George Orwell i Burma, på den tiden okuperat av Storbrittannien. 

“Shooting an Elephant” är en essä som berättar en av Orwells egna upplevelser av sitt arbete som polis i Burma. Berättelsen handlar, som titeln avslöjar, om arkebuseringen av en elefant, men är också full av metaforer om kolonialismens motsättningar och dilemman. 

Boken innehåller också ett urval av andra essäer av Orwell.
